CDC wants more healthcare workers to get flu shots

first_imgFeb 13, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new recommendations last week in an effort to push the percentage of healthcare workers who receive influenza shots above the 40% range, where it has been stalled for years.Among other things, the agency recommended that healthcare facilities offer free flu shots annually to workers on every shift, monitor flu vaccination coverage regularly during the flu season, and obtain signed forms from those who give nonmedical reasons for refusing a shot.”The new recommendations provide strategies to make vaccine more accessible to healthcare workers and to help facilities better determine coverage rates and the reasons their staff have for not getting vaccinated,” the CDC said in a news release.In the interest of protecting both patients and workers, the CDC routinely includes healthcare workers in the general flu immunization recommendations it issues each year. The new recommendations are intended to help healthcare facility administrators, infection control professionals, and occupational health specialists boost immunization rates in their institutions.Flu immunization coverage among healthcare workers was only about 10% as recently as 1989, the report says. The rate improved to roughly 40% in the ensuing few years, but it has remained “relatively constant” since 1997, it states. One of the government’s health objectives is to raise flu-shot coverage among healthcare workers to 60% by 2010.The new recommendations were prepared by the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. USDA plans risk-based meat inspection system

first_imgMar 7, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – Federal officials recently proposed a timetable to begin implementing a new meat and poultry inspection system designed to reduce foodborne illnesses by focusing more attention on high-risk facilities and those with poor safety records.The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has been exploring “risk-based inspection” since 2000. On Feb 22, Richard Raymond, USDA undersecretary for food safety, proposed to implement the new inspection system in April at 30 locations, and possibly to expand it to 150 locations by the end of 2007, according to an FSIS press release.The proposed system is seen as the biggest change in the USDA’s food inspection program since 1996, when the Hazard Analysis and Critical Point Systems (HACCP) rule made food processors responsible for systematically assessing, preventing, and controlling food safety hazards.Assessing each facility’s food safety record and the relative risk of what is produced will allow the FSIS to better allocate its inspection resources to the processors that need them most, while continuing daily inspections at all facilities, the FSIS said in the press release. Iceberg lettuce and spinach now join meat, poultry, molluscan shellfish, and dried spices on the list of foods that can be irradiated for safety in the United States, said FDA spokesman Sebastian Cianci. The FDA action does not include other varieties of lettuce. The approval was sought by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), formerly the National Food Processors Association, Cianci told CIDRAP News. first_imgPrema podacima Državnog zavoda za statistiku ( DZS ), u 2016. na barem jednome privatnom višednevnom putovanju bilo je 1,6 milijuna ili 44,0% stanovništva Hrvatske u dobi od 15 i  više godina. Ukupno je ostvareno 3,8 milijuna privatnih putovanja, od čega je 2,5 milijuna (67,8%) bilo u Hrvatskoj, a 1,2 milijuna (32,2%) u inozemstvo.U inozemstvo se najviše putovalo u Bosnu i Hercegovinu (21,5% putovanja), Italiju (13,7%), Njemačku (12,0%), Austriju (11,3%) i Sloveniju (9,1%). S obzirom na duljinu boravka na putovanju,2,0 milijuna putovanja (52,1%) bilo je kraće, a 1,8 milijuna (47,9%) dulje. Najčešći motivi odlaska na privatno višednevno putovanje jesu posjet rodbini i prijateljima (1,2 milijuna putovanja ili 32,7%) i odmor na moru (1,1 milijun putovanja ili 28,3%). Na privatnim višednevnim putovanjima stanovništvo Hrvatske ostvarilo je ukupno 23,1 milijun noćenja, od čega je 16,8 milijuna noćenja (72,8%) ostvareno u Hrvatskoj, a 6,3 milijuna (27,2%) na putovanjima u inozemstvo. Na jednom putovanju ostvareno je prosječno 6,1 noćenje. Na putovanjima u Hrvatskoj ostvareno je prosječno 6,6 noćenja, a 5,2 noćenja na putovanjima u inozemstvo. S obzirom na duljinu boravka na putovanju, 3,9 milijuna noćenja (17,0%) ostvareno je na kraćim, a 19,2 milijuna (83,0%) na duljim putovanjima. Prema vrsti smještaja, najviše noćenja ostvareno je u neplaćenim smještajnim objektima kod rodbine i prijatelja (8,6 milijuna noćenja ili 37,4%).Ukupni izdaci na privatnim višednevnim putovanjima iznosili su 6,5 milijardi kuna, od čega 3,1 milijardi kuna (48,8%) u Hrvatskoj, a 3,3 milijardi (51,2%) u inozemstvu. Prosječni troškovi po putovanju iznosili su 1 717 kuna.
