Nelson survives series against pesky Rebels, off to provincials in Smithers

first_imgBy Bruce FuhrThe Nelson Daily SportsNelson is going to the B.C. Hockey Tier III Bantam Rep Championship tournament next month in Smithers.Which is really no surprise considering how the Leafs owned the Castlegar Rebels during the regular season. However, this playoff series was far from a walk in the park for the Leafs as the Rebels played Nelson tough in all three games losing the first-team-to-four-points series 5-1.“It feels great to be going (to Smithers),” said Nelson defenceman Tyler Podgorenko from outside the winner’s dressing room. “We’ve come a long way since the start of the season and worked through that entire game so this feels really good.”The Leafs clinched the West Kootenay title by rallying from a 3-0 deficit to steal a 5-4 victory Sunday before a boisterous crowd at the NDCC Arena.Sawyer Hunt scored the winning goal at 37 seconds of the third period, and Brayden Pompu made some key saves in the final minutes to power the home side to the series clinching victory.“I let in a few bad goals I shouldn’t have let in but then after that I got some help from our goalie coach (Ian Perreault) . . . he’s an amazing goalie coach who’s helped me all year and he helped me get a lot of confidence at the end,” a beaming Pompu, who had a key kick save in the final minutes of the third period to preserve the win, told The Nelson Daily.Chase Butula got the scoring started for Castlegar before Edward Lindsey and Craig Pilla gave the visitors the three-goal advantage at the first intermission. But Nelson rebounded in the second, scoring two goals in two minutes. Sam Weber got the Leafs going before Brandon Sookro cut the margin to 3-2. Nolan Percival tied the game at the midway point of the period.“I don’t know what happened,” said Nelson captain Colton Dachwitz. “(Castlegar) just came out on fire and we just didn’t come out as hard as they did.”“(But) we never gave up,” Dachwitz, making his fourth trip to a provincial tournament. “We got re-focused in the dressing room and that helped us get back in the game in the second.”Castlegar regained the lead when Nick Evdokimoff beat Pompu but Dachwitz tied the game before the period ended. In the third Hunt pounced on a loose puck to score the game-winning goal.“We just wanted to get it deep and buy time,” Dachwitz said when asked about the strategy in the third period. “We knew their goalie was letting out a lot of rebounds so we just wanted to capitalize on them.”Nelson had a chance to increase the lead but Percival missed a penalty shot and Hunt saw the puck roll of his stick while staring at a wide-open net.Nelson opened the series with a 9-3 victory Friday in game one. Trailing 3-2 after one period, the Leafs out scored the Rebels 7-1.Sam Weber led the Leafs with two goals while Brandon Sookro had a goal and two assists.Saturday, Castlegar forced a third game after rallying from a 6-3 deficit to grab a 7-7 tie.Michael Viala scored three times and Grayson Reitmeyer added a pair to lead the Nelson offence. Dylan Whiffen and Hunt added singles. The comeback point proved to Castlegar coach Grant Pilla the drive his team displayed in the playoffs.“Coming in we were the underdogs as Nelson has a pretty strong team but my guys peaked at the right time,” Pilla explained. “They decided they didn’t want to finish the season without leaving it all on the ice . . .. “And I’m proud of them . . . I’ve very proud of them for the way the played.”ICE CHIPS: Nelson played without key forward Michael Viala, who was suspended for Sunday’s game after receiving a misconduct in the final 10 minutes of the third period of Saturday’s 7-7 tie. . . . Nelson defenceman Carson Arcuri injured his leg in the series. . . .During Friday’s game there was more action off the ice than on the ice as parents from both teams exchanged words. Some parents needed to be removed from the arena.sports@thenelsondaily.comlast_img read more

Saints rally past Clan to open up lead in BCIHL standings

first_img“SFU gave us all we could handle tonight, but the guys dug deep in the third period and got rewarded,” said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.”Jordan has been the top player in our league this season bar-none, and he showed why again tonight with a couple big goals when we needed them.”We also did a great job defensively limiting SFU’s scoring chances and our six defencemen as a unit played probably their best game of the season.”Down 2-1 halfway through the final period, Beau Taylor drew Selkirk level with a slick deflection off a Dylan Smith point shot. And Saints captain Jordan Wood took over from there, scoring two goals just 22 seconds apart to put his team up a pair with six minutes left before completing the hat trick with an empty net goal in the game’s closing moments. Selkirk had opened the scoring 3:14 into the first period when Mason Spear banked a puck into the net off Clan netminder Graeme Gordon. But SFU leveled the game at 1-1 on a power-play marker from Kody Dhaliwal midway through the frame and went ahead 51 seconds into the middle period on another man-advantage goal, this time from Nick Sandor. Alex Sirard got the start in net for the Saints after returning from a minor injury and picked up his 10th win of the season with a 25-save effort. Gordon took the loss in net for the Clan despite making a number of key saves in the first and second periods. He allowed four goals on 31 shots and was relieved by Evan Kurylo after an altercation following Selkirk’s fourth goal. Dylan Smith joined Wood in picking up three points on the night, as he assisted on a trio of third period goals. The Selkirk Saints created a little more distance in B.C. Intercolligiate League standings by stopping Simon Fraser 5-2 in action Saturday in Castlegar. The 16-1 Saints now lead the Clan by five points with a game in hand but only after scoring the win with a third-period surge. The Saints’ magic number for clinching first place for the regular season now stands at eight points with seven games remaining.last_img read more

Production Sound Checklist + Top Three Digital Recorders

first_imgIn film and video, the production sound mixer is responsible for obtaining the cleanest possible dialogue recording. In this post we’ll take a look at a few ways this is accomplished. The sound mixer for picture is head of the sound department and is responsible for all recording, monitoring, and leveling of the audio during production. Because the production sound mixer supervises the boom operator as well as any other audio assistants, he/she will typically make the decisions including microphone placement and the type of microphones used on-set. The sound mixer can also make critical mixing decisions by mixing down multiple audio signals in real time, based on what he/she thinks the sound designer, sound effects editors, or foley artist will need in post-production.Many production sound mixers believe that capturing the original performances for the director, with the highest possible quality, will yield the best results for the most natural performance. ADR can save a film, but consequently it can also hurt it. Since ADR often doesn’t begin until months after filming has ceased (minus the additional talent that was originally present in the scene) comic timing, subtle cues and mood changes are much more difficult to duplicate. If you plan to utilize ADR, check out our previous post: ADR: Automatic Dialogue Replacement Tips and Tricks. Most production sound mixers will stress the importance of using the same style of recording throughout the film. It is much easier to engage your audience – and  keep the audience engaged – with consistent dialogue tracks. The overall goal of the sound department is making the audience forget about the reality of the movie for just an hour or two; keeping the suspended belief alive. If the mixing style suddenly becomes inconsistent, your audience may be jolted back into reality. Maintaining a consistent style is a critical objective and the duty of the sound mixer is to maintain consistency regardless of the location.Production Sound Mixer ChecklistBefore production begins, there are a number of things the sound mixer needs to confirm with the director and other personnel in the production. Let’s look at a complete checklist for the production sound mixer…Pre-production:Review and get familiar with the script. Note any critical dialogue areas.Meet with the director; discuss any conceptual visions/technical requirements.Location Scouting – Visit all locations around the same time of day you will be filming for a more accurate assessment of NAT sound. Determine all technical requirements for recording dialogue.Asses and order any necessary equipment. Run full equipment tests to insure everything is operational.Assemble your department. Hire enough personnel including boom operator and utility.Ensure all equipment is properly loaded into transportation for safe arrival. Three Pro Level Audio Recorders1.
