Future of Donegal town councils should be known next week

first_img Google+ Town and County councillors are expected this evening to make a last ditch plea to Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan not to abolish their local authorities.The Minister is due to address the annual conference of the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, tonight.Speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties in July, Minister Phil r Hogan said it was “extremely likely” the number of local authorities and councillors across the country would be cut.Concerns have already been expressed in Donegal about the futures of  Bundoran, Ballyshannon and Buncrana town Councils.Letterkenny Town Council seems unlikely to be effected but the minister is ruling anything out.Former Mayor of Letterkenny Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle is on the record as saying that a relatively small saving would come at a significant cost to local democracy.The siutation should become clearer when the publication of the long-delayed plans for local government reform report takes place next week.
