McQuilling: Clean Tanker Rates Rise on US Gulf-Caribbean Route

first_imgFreight rates for clean tankers in the US Gulf-Caribbean are on the rise, underpinned by a conglomerate of supportive fundamentals, according to McQuilling Partners.TC3 was assessed at WS 195 on June 27, a 26% rise from June’s open, while freight on the US Gulf-Caribbean route has risen by USD 150,000 over the same period. US Gulf refiners continue to run at high utilization with crude intake reaching 17.2 million b/d in the last week, boosting gasoline inventories to 242 million barrels.Clean cargoes out of this region have been plentiful with total US product exports averaging at 5.1 million b/d per month, providing support for tanker demand, however, there is some risk building due to a 400,000 b/d product inventory surplus forecast for the July-September period.“Weakness in the Latin American refining sector has increased import requirements and pulled much of these volumes south towards the Caribbean, Brazil and Chile,” McQuilling Partners said.Refining activity in this region “is projected to trend upwards” in the coming months, which may pressure imports, however, in the near-term, McQuilling Partners expects support stemming from the recent shutdown of the 330,000 b/d Salina Cruz refinery in Mexico after violent weather caused a fire on June 14.“Ample cargo supply in the US Gulf and strong product demand to the south have supported increased fixing activity and in turn tightened the position list for July dates, which will likely provide further support for tanker freight rates in both US Gulf and Caribbean.”The US Gulf-Caribbean market stands supported by stronger fundamentals in the short-term, which will likely continue the current freight rate momentum, while also considering that inclement weather during the Atlantic hurricane season “may provide some temporary upside volatility.”last_img read more

Robert Upshaw is off to promising start with Lakers thanks to life mentor

first_imgRobert Upshaw, the Lakers rookie center by way of Fresno State and Washington, stood between Okafor and the hoop, as tall and wide as one of the gaudy casinos lining the Las Vegas Strip. When Okafor lunged left, Upshaw beat him to the spot. When Okafor went right, Upshaw used his feet and upper body to cut him off. Frustrated, Okafor dropped his head and tried bulldozing a straight path to the basket. Only Upshaw held his ground. As a last resort, Okafor rose up for a shot. But Upshaw was having none of it, rising up right along with him to easily swat Okafor’s shot away.At that very moment, the imagination of every Lakers fan watching at the Thomas & Mack Center or on televisions across the country ran wild. After spending the last two seasons as a virtual layup line for opposing teams, allowing them to dance their way through the paint for easy baskets, have the Lakers uncovered the kind of rim-protecting big man they so sorely need? “When you think about a true five man who can get in the middle of the paint, who can block a shot and can rebound and who can get out there and change the complexion of the flow, Robert Upshaw can do that,” Lakers summer league coach Mark Madsen said. The defensive presence Upshaw has provided the Lakers through their first two summer league games has been first-round quality. The reality is, Upshaw is an un-drafted free agent rookie carrying so much excess baggage that NBA teams wouldn’t even invest a second-round pick in him last month. And that’s astonishing for a 7-footer who averaged a national-best 4.5 blocked shots last season at Washington. But then, playing basketball has never been the problem for Upshaw. It’s everything that happens over the 22 other hours of the day that’s been the issue.Upshaw’s draft-day nosedive was the result of getting kicked off teams at Fresno State and Washington for a variety of team violations, ranging from failed drug tests to missing class.During his freshman year at Fresno State, the former top-50 recruit was suspended twice by Bulldogs coach Rodney Terry over a five-week span and then finally booted from the program for good when he messed up a third time. After sitting out a year upon transferring to Washington, Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar applied tough-love tactics on Upshaw by attaching playing time to class attendance and staying on the straight and narrow. It worked — for a little while. With Upshaw defending the paint last year, Washington started the season 11-0 and was ranked in the top 20.But less than 24 hours after going toe-to-toe with Utah big man Jakob Poeltl with 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, Upshaw was kicked off the team for violating team rules.Washington was never the same, going 2-10 the rest of the way.Upshaw never recovered, either. After emerging as one of the top center prospects in the country, he saw his draft stock plummet so severely that he now has to back-door his way to the NBA dreams. He’s in Las Vegas, of all places, trying to rehabilitate his image.“And I completely understand what’s at stake,” Upshaw said. It’s ironic, in a way. With the help of self-introspection and by surrounding himself with positive people — including a life mentor — Upshaw traces the root of his issues to a sense of entitlement. “It was me assuming I had it all,” he said. “Because that’s what I did. And that’s how I acted. And I paid for it. Twice. And that’s on me.”In doing so, Upshaw forced himself into a corner so narrow, he now has to work a thousand times harder to get what he mistakenly thought he already had. With very little room for error. The way Upshaw sees it, he’s getting a third chance to get this right. There might not be a fourth.“I’m not going to be perfect. Nobody is,” Upshaw said. “But I know this is what I want. I know this is what I want to do with my life. And I know what I have to do.”The on-the-floor stuff should not be a problem.Despite playing in just 41 games over the last three years — and none since January — Upshaw has acquitted himself well with the Lakers. He is a defensive and rebounding natural with surprising touch around the basket. Assuming he stays clean off the court, it’s easy to imagine Upshaw making the team and earning a spot in the rotation behind starting center Roy Hibbert. “I’m nowhere near 100 percent. But I’m getting in shape as we speak,” Upshaw said. “I’m working hard. Things are starting to come back for me. And once I get my feet under me, get back in the shape I need to be, things are going to be even better.”It’s already off to a promising start. LAS VEGAS >> The entry pass reached Jahlil Okafor on the left block, one of the go-to sweet spots from which he typically carves up opposing big men. As he’s done so many other times before, the 6-foot-11 Philadelphia 76ers lottery pick turned to square up his defender. Three options were available: Power drive to his left or right for a layup. Or step back for a short floater.Point being, with his nimble footwork, advanced offensive post game and an array of moves at his disposal, Okafor could pick and chose his route to a bucket.Or so he thought. But there was one very big problem, and he stood an even 7-foot with a 7-foot-5 wing span and a thick, powerful body.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Wenger desperate for lifeline in Premier League finale

first_imgArsenal’s French manager Arsene Wenger (C) stands on the touchline in a past game.London, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsene Wenger will hope an unexpected slip from Liverpool or Manchester City helps silence a growing army of critics as Arsenal try to salvage their traumatic Premier League campaign by snatching a Champions League berth in Sunday’s season finale.Rocked by Arsenal’s failure to live up to his expectations, and with a succession of former players questioning his methods, Wenger has been under fire like never before in his 21-year reign — and the lowest moment of all is likely to come at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. As if finishing below arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the first time in 22 years wasn’t bad enough, Wenger’s bid to lead Arsenal into the Champions League for a 20th successive season is in grave danger heading into their last league game against Everton. To make matters worse, his former captain Tony Adams said Wenger “couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag” in an extract from his autobiography “Sober”, serialised in the Sun newspaper.Wenger, however, brushed off the criticism from former defender Adams, whose coaching tenure at Granada has ended in relegation from La Liga in Spain. With the title race settled in Chelsea’s favour, Tottenham guaranteed to finish second and the three relegation places filled by Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hull, attention will focus Sunday on the battle for the lucrative remaining two places in Europe’s elite club competition.Despite winning six of their last seven games, Arsenal are in fifth place, one point behind fourth placed Liverpool and three adrift of third placed City.If Liverpool beat relegated Middlesbrough at Anfield and City avoid defeat at struggling Watford, then, even if Arsenal win, Wenger’s side will be consigned to the indignity of Thursday nights in the unglamourous Europa League next term.Having refused to confirm if he will accept Arsenal’s offer of a new contract, the 67-year-old Wenger said this week said his future will be settled when he meets the club’s powerbrokers after the Gunners’ FA Cup final date with Chelsea on May 27.Those are still likely to be led by US-based owner Stan Kroenke despite a reported fresh takeover bid by minority shareholder Alisher Usmanov.Meanwhile, a fourth successive City victory will see them hold on to third place and go straight into next season’s Champions League, while a draw would also be enough to ensure a top four finish. – ‘Icing on the cake’ –However, City could still miss out altogether if they lose, Liverpool defeat Middlesbrough and Arsenal improve their goal difference by at least five in the process of beating Everton.Calling for one last push after an underwhelming first season in charge, City boss Pep Guardiola said: “We still have 95, 96 minutes to fight to do one thing that’s so important for the club and the future.Liverpool will compete in the Champions League for the first time since 2014-15, and only the second time in eight years, as long as they match Arsenal’s result.“The Champions League, for different reasons, is a wonderful competition. It would be the icing on the cake,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.Already certain to finish sixth, Manchester United will send out a team largely comprised of youth team players as boss Jose Mourinho keeps his senior stars fresh for next week’s Europa League final against Ajax.If United win the Europa League they will claim a place in the Champions League, giving Mourinho the last laugh while his old rival Wenger faces a troubled future.Fixtures (all 1400 GMT)Arsenal v Everton, Burnley v West Ham, Chelsea v Sunderland, Hull v Tottenham, Leicester v Bournemouth, Liverpool v Middlesbrough, Manchester United v Crystal Palace, Southampton v Stoke, Swansea v West Brom, Watford v Manchester City Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more
