Should Lakers go big or small in the NBA Draft?

first_imgThe implications over the Lakers’ draft choice could prove as small as the 6-foot-5, 196-pound Mudiay or the 6-foot-5, 180-pound D’Angelo Russell, considering every prospect of this star-studded draft class would fill one of the Lakers’ many needs. The implications could prove as big as Okafor’s 6-foot-11, 270-pound frame based on NBA Draft history. In 1984, Houston used its No. 1 pick on Hakeem Olajuwon, whose post moves helped secure two NBA championships. Portland drafted center Sam Bowie, who became injury-riddled. Chicago chose shooting guard Michael Jordan, who won six NBA championships and became the league’s fourth all-time leading scorer. “It makes sense to build around a big,” Kupchak said. “But you don’t want to take a big because it’s a big, and then pass on the No. 3 pick that turned out to be Michael Jordan.”After the Lakers hosted Okafor, Mudiay and Russell in workouts, Kupchak said “our comfort level with the three players is really good.” He then added “it’s too early to tell” on where he stands. The Lakers would like to work out Kentucky center Karl-Anthony Towns, who has currently declined invitations presumably because Minnesota will choose him at No. 1. Kupchak will watch Spanish power forward Kristaps Porzingis in a workout in Las Vegas on Saturday. But should the Lakers’ No. 2 considerations rest on Okafor, Russell or Mudiay, which one will they choose?“If one of those individuals of this year’s draft is capable of shifting the style of play in the game, you better take them,” said former Lakers forward Rick Fox, an NBA TV analyst. “But if they’re not there, you have to address how to keep up with the rest of the Joneses.’”Okafor averaged 17.3 points per game on 66.4 percent shooting, 8.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last season at Duke. He dominated his Lakers workout so well that assistant Mark Madsen iced his left knee afterwards. Okafor called his post presence “his bread and butter,” though he noted the NBA’s emphasis on outside shooting and point-guard play will help him. “I won’t be double-teamed as much,” Okafor said. “I’ll probably be surrounded by some really good shooters, so that also will be to my benefit because I can pass.”Questions still persist about Okafor’s defense and his free-throw shooting (51 percent), and whether his bruising style is too similar to Lakers forward Julius Randle. “Bigs typically have been slower to develop,” Kupchak said. “Big players get selected to play the game because they’re big. They’re taught to play the game. Then they’re taught to learn to love the game.”Kupchak sounded skeptical the Lakers could find a dominant big man with their 27th or 34th draft selections. The Clippers selected DeAndre Jordan with the 35th pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, but Kupchak noted that “does not happen very often.” Meanwhile, the Lakers bought the 46th pick from Washington last year to draft Jordan Clarkson, who made the NBA’s All-Rookie first team. Kupchak suggested “we could pick another guard to play with Jordan and make him feel comfortable,” since the Lakers view Clarkson as more of a scorer than playmaker. Mudiay averaged 17.7 points on 54.5 percent shooting, 6.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association. Considering Mudiay also shot only 37.4 percent from 3-point range and 57.4 percent from the foul line, perhaps Russell has the edge after averaging 19.3 points and five assists in his freshman season at Ohio State. “Playing one year in college, the spacing was so cluttered,” Russell said. “I feel like I’ll separate myself and be able to pass and have the space (in the NBA).”Kupchak maintained “our opinions are very similar” among the Lakers’ front office on the No. 2 pick. But Kupchak stressed “there doesn’t have to be a consensus,” since he will make the final call. “Someone has to be accountable,” Kupchak said. “For better or for worse, that will be me.”Then, the Lakers will discover whether going big or small in the NBA Draft makes either a big or small difference. When he watches NBA games both in the stands and on television, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak seems convinced a team’s success largely hinges on having a star point guard. “It can be argued in today’s game that maybe you should do that,” Kupchak said, before listing Chris Paul, James Harden, Tony Parker and Mike Conley. “You can argue maybe the way to go is with the guard.”Kupchak’s conviction soon wavers after reflecting on the Lakers’ storied history. The Lakers won 16 NBA championships when George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal dominated inside through multiple eras of the franchise’s 67-year-old existence.“That is a good argument,” Kupchak said before gazing at the Lakers’ championship banners and retired uniforms on the walls of their practice court in El Segundo. “We have a lot of photos in this building, and there are lot of jerseys over there of big men that we retired that we had great success with.” Once the NBA Draft starts on June 25, the Lakers will need to have clarity on an issue that will significantly determine how well they rebuild after finishing last season with the franchise’s worst record. Will the Lakers use their No. 2 pick to draft another physically imposing post player to carry the purple and gold with their strong backs?“Big men still run the game,” Duke center Jahlil Okafor said. “When you have a dominant big man, that changes the aspect of the game.”Or will the Lakers opt for a point guard, whose speed and smarts will accelerate them into the modern NBA? “My style of play is an NBA style of play,” said point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, who played last season professionally in China. “I love pick-and-roll situations and getting up and down the court.”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Reynolds she knows ‘for certain’ Glenwood staff concerns didn’t reach her office

first_imgDES MOINES — Governor Kim Reynolds says she fired the director of the state’s largest agency this summer, in part, because of the deaths of disabled patients at the Glenwood Resource Center.Reynolds has previously declined to discuss exactly why Jerry Foxhoven was dismissed, but Tuesday the governor indicated she grew frustrated with the data Foxhoven was giving her staff about the rate of patient deaths at Glenwood.“I can’t keep continuing to get these kind of reports. I don’t care if it’s a national average. I know it’s a frail population, but I believe we can do better,” Reynolds said. “…That was one of the many factors.”The U.S. Department of Justice notified the state in a November 21, 2019 letter that a federal investigation was being launched into patient care as well as allegations Glenwood patients were being used as human subjects in sex experiments. Some Glenwood staff had reported concerns to their superiors, but the governor said those reports never reached her office.“I first became aware of that when we received the letter from the DOJ and that is when we first learned that there were issues or that that was being done at Glenwood,” the governor said.Reynolds told reporters Tuesday her administration’s initial investigation soon found “nothing was being done” to address the allegations. Glenwood’s superintendent was placed on administrative leave December 9th  and fired 21 days later. However, the agency manager who approved the sex experiments on Glenwood patients was allowed to retire recently.“Part of that is doing the due diligence and going through the research,” Reynolds said when asked about that manager’s retirement, “and so we also have to make sure that we have adequate information when we make the decisions that we made.”The governor said it’s “absolutely fine” for legislators to investigate what has happened and ask new DHS director Kelly Garcia what steps are being taken to improve the Glenwood Resource Center.“If they have additional questions, she’s more than happy to sit down and walk them through that,” Reynolds said. “No problems whatsoever.”Reynolds indicated doctors from the University of Iowa are continuing to make trips to Glenwood to evaluate the health of the disabled patients, many of whom are being treated for serious illnesses. Reynolds said the director of the Department of Human Services is in the process of hiring one person who’ll be in charge of all the state-run institutions under DHS management. That would include the Glenwood Resource Center as well as the Woodward Resource Center, which is also under federal investigation for its care of disabled patients.Reynolds told reporters late this morning that she’s continuing to assemble a team of top managers, with the expectation they will communicate and collaborate with her staff.“When you don’t know what you don’t know, you’re kind of handcuffed on some of the changes that you can make,” Reynolds said.Reynolds said she knows “for certain” no one on Glenwood’s staff notified her office of their concerns about Glenwood patients.last_img read more

DotNetNuke: An Open-Source CMS … For Microsoft Web Sites

first_imgCognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now brian proffitt Tags:#.NET#apache#cms#content management system#Microsoft#Open Source#Web Content Version 7.0 of DotNetNuke, an open-source content-management system that you’ve probably never heard of, is now released and bringing enterprise-level web content functionality to users committed to Microsoft-based infrastructure. The .NET-based DotNetNuke will be a significant player in a growing cloud-computing environment where Microsoft Web servers may be more relevant.Web Servers: Where Microsoft Doesn’t Rule Depending on how you examine the data, less than one-fifth of the world’s sites run Microsoft-based Web servers like Internet Information Server. And, unlike all the cool kids running open-source code like Apache and nginx, IIS players don’t always want to run popular content-management systems like Joomla, Drupal or WordPress.[Update: The preceding paragraph was corrected to update an error regarding the capabilities of CMS systems and IIS. -BKP]Let’s be honest: 16.52% of the world’s tracked Web servers running IIS in November 2012 is tiny compared to Apache’s 57.23% share. But having almost 17% of servers locked up is still a heck of lot of sites — 103.3 million, actually. Even if just 1% of them need a WordPress-like CMS, that’s a little over a million sites pining away. It’s all very well to snicker at these shops and prescribe spinning up some Apache-on-Linux servers, and installing Joomla or one of the other CMSes. But CIOs make IT investments for a strategic reason and have put a lot of time and money into their infrastructure. Generally, they’re not just rolling dice, which means it’s not always easy to get them to shift to non-Microsoft technologies. Enter DotNetNuke Corp., maker of its self-named .NET-based platform. The CMS plays very well with native Microsoft tech and provides CIOs a robust tool that compares favorably with Drupal. Since its initial release in late 2002, DotNetNuke has enjoyed a strong following within the Microsoft ecosystem, and has about 800,000 registered users, according to Shaun Walker, co-founder and CTO of the company.Filling The .NET GapThe latest iteration of DotNetNuke has a broad range of new features, with a new interface that includes a more-robust editor and version-management system, as well as Active Directory support so enterprise employees can plug into site-content systems seamlessly. Cascading-style-sheet management is reportedly a lot easier to use, which should make designers happy.DotNetNuke is a bit of an oddity within the Microsoft world. It’s actually an open-source licensed platform, using an MIT software license. The MIT license is what’s known as a permissive license, which means the code for the software is open but users and developers aren’t required to publish their changes, as with restrictive licenses like the GNU General Public License. Walker highlighted this as one reason why Microsoft-oriented customers don’t have a problem with using an open-source platform. That DotNetNuke’s potential market is such a small minority of servers in the world might seem like a liability, but Walker believes that there is a lot of potential for DotNetNuke just around the corner. With the advent of HTML5 and Java-based sites, “pretty soon the underlying architecture won’t matter as much.”If development does shift more to the client-side layer, then the Web server layer where Apache, nginx, and IIS live would become more of an abstraction. Given the relatively low cost of cloud-based instances of even IIS, companies with more .Net assets and developers might therefore migrate to IIS in order to streamline their IT resources. That’s the vision Walker has, but it remains to be seen if IIS can experience strong growth, even in the cloud, up against the free Apache and nginx servers. For now, DotNetNuke soldiers on, filling a gap for IT managers who are still dedicated to the Microsoft Way.Image courtesy of Shutterstock.center_img IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Related Posts last_img read more
