New Titan Ethane Theory Proposed

first_imgThey wonder where the ethane went (see 09/14/2006 and its links).  The case of the missing ethane on Titan has only gotten more puzzling since the Huygens Probe landed last year and found almost none, when oceans a mile deep were anticipated.  In Nature last week,1 D. M. Hunten (U of Arizona) posited a new idea.  It went into smust.  Smust, like smores but not as tasty, is a contraction of the words smog and dust.  Instead of falling as rain, the ethane molecules globbed onto smog particles and slowly descended to the surface, where they piled up instead of liquefying.  That’s where the sand for the dunes (05/04/2006) came from, he thinks.Titan, has a dense atmosphere of nitrogen with a few per cent of methane.  At visible wavelengths its surface is hidden by dense orange-brown smog, which is produced in the stratosphere by photochemical reactions following the dissociation of methane by solar ultraviolet light.  The most abundant of the products of these reactions is ethane, and enough of it should have been generated over the life of the Solar System to form a satellite-wide ocean one kilometre deep…. Here I explain the mysterious absence or rarity of liquid ethane: it condenses onto the smog particles, instead of into liquid drops, at the cold temperatures in Titan’s atmosphere.  This dusty combination of smog and ethane, forming deposits several kilometres thick on the surface, including the observed dunes and dark areas, could be named ‘smust’.  This satellite-wide deposit replaces the ocean long thought to be an important feature of Titan. In a note added in proof, Hunten speculated about the ethane cloud at Titan detected by Cassini last month (see 09/14/2006).  The ethane molecules in the cloud amount to only a tiny fraction of the total, he said.  His thoughts did not rely on any tangible evidence; only that “their presence may be compatible with the smust particles discussed here.”It is entirely reasonable that these few molecules would not reside on the smust particles.  A possible difficulty is that this small amount of ethane vapour would be unable to condense.  On the other hand, if more ethane were available one would expect the cloud particles to grow larger; probably the attachment of most of the ethane to the smust particles is necessary to prevent this.Another view on the methane that could be the parent of ethane comes from New Scientist.  David Shiga interviewed Cassini scientists in Pasadena who believe there is evidence for volcanic calderas on the large moon.  Some of the radar images have features that resemble liquid-filled calderas with rounded edges, but others feel meteor impacts could be responsible.  Volcanism could belch out methane from the interior, perhaps, but this does not explain where the ethane went.    The reporter seemed more interested in the idea that volcanism means heat, and heat means liquid.  To an evolutionist, that means life can’t be far away: “What with the methane lakes, perhaps some type of exotic exobiology might not be completely out of the question,” said one.  Shiga took this one suggestion by one scientist as inspiration for the title of his article: “Slushy volcanoes might support life on Titan…. The heat and chemicals associated with these possible volcanoes could provide a niche for life on the frigid moon.”  The bulk of the article was about volcanoes, not life.1D. M. Hunten, “The sequestration of ethane on Titan in smog particles,” Nature 443, 669-670(12 October 2006) | doi:10.1038/nature05157.It’s fair to propose an explanation for something, but a little unfair to propose one when it cannot be tested for a long time.  It may be well into the 2030s before another probe returns to Titan, and even then, it may be a blimp-like device incapable of digging several kilometers into the surface to measure the deposits.  What if Hunten’s mechanism works somewhat, and a lander detects these smust particles on the surface, but cannot determine if the layer is only inches deep?  One could not know that there is enough of it to explain the missing billions of years without extremely difficult and costly efforts.  Additionally, it is very difficult to simulate Titan conditions on Earth.  The only lab evidence Hunten mentioned did not support his theory:It would be desirable to verify in the laboratory the attachment of ethane molecules to smog particles, here deduced from their behaviour on Jupiter.  Such particles, with their fluffy structure, have, however, not been produced in experiments, which instead generate a dense deposit on the walls of the vessel.  It will be a challenge to reproduce this structure along with a realistic composition, and then to expose the particles to ethane molecules. In other words, this is just an airy, fluffy suggestion on his part.  Even if the particles formed and fell as he suggested, what would keep them from liquefying on the surface after they compacted?  The fact is, Titan was not the oceanic planet that the best scientists predicted.  Speculating after the fact what happened to the missing ethane is not science till verified.  While no one would deny Dr. Hunten his right to speculate based on his own assumptions about the age of Titan, his little story should not be put forth as “the answer” to this huge problem.  Speculation is no substitute for openmindedness that one’s assumptions could be vastly in error.    As for the relentless suggestions that liquid water or ethane mean the possibility of life, this is so silly it is tiring.  Here’s a better form of entertainment that’s realistic.  For a wild ride down to the surface of Titan aboard Huygens, based on actual photos and measurements, download the animations from the Huygens CD-Rom available from the European Space Agency.  For the download page, click here.(Visited 38 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

SA business keen on investing in Benin

first_img12 September 2012 South African businesspeople currently on a selling and investment mission in Benin, led by Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Elizabeth Thabethe, have expressed their excitement about investing in the country. Thabethe and the 15-member business delegation arrived in Benin on Sunday night, and on Monday joined businesspeople from Benin at a trade and investment seminar. Thabethe, addressing the seminar, urged South Africa’s business community to seize the opportunities on offer in Benin. Madina Sephou, Benin’s Minister of Industry, Trade, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, said businesses from both countries should take advantage of the conducive environment created by their governments and form partnerships to boost trade.Opportunities in various sectors Peggy Mahlaba, a Cape Town-based electrical infrastructure engineer and managing director of Imbovotho Engineering, said presentations made at the seminar showed a country undertaking a major infrastructure development programme. “We are interested in claiming our stake in the energy-generation sphere as the country experiences a serious shortage of electricity,” said Mahlaba. “Load shedding is common as they lack capacity to generate sufficient power and meet the consumption demand.” Interior designer as well as deputy chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal chapter of the South African Women Entrepreneurs’ Network (Sawen), Phindile Mkhize, said the development proposed in the tourism sector would give her an opportunity to decorate hotels, lodges and other tourist attractions in Benin with South African decor, in which the people of the West African country had shown interest. “I will be sharing information on all the opportunities in Benin and contacts of relevant people in different sectors with other Sawen members so that they can also come here and establish partnerships with other businesswomen,” said Mkhize. North West businessman Gordon Cornish said agriculture and agro-processing in Benin beckoned. Cornish said he would study all aspects of both sectors, including legislation governing land ownership, as he intended to invest in land to set up an agricultural and agro-processing business. Meanwhile, Daniel Magagula of JK Consulting Engineers in Gauteng province said he had identified opportunities in mining and the construction of the national road network that the Beninese government had embarked on.Opportunities in various sectors Briefing journalists in Pretoria last week, Thabethe said the mission to Benin took place within the context of South Africa’s strategic engagement with the rest of the continent, aimed at supporting Africa’s economic revival and promoting intra-African trade. “It is important for South Africa to continue to pursue economic collaboration and partnership with African countries when crafting the way forward for sustainable economic development and the development of investment in the African region,” Thabethe said. “Benin, like most countries in Africa, presents a wealth of business opportunities for South African companies. By establishing their presence in this country, South African companies would be able to access other markets in the West African region and Africa at large.” According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Benin’s domestic economy revolves around subsistence agriculture, which accounts for 35.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) and is the main source of income for over half of the population. Cotton is the main commercial crop, accounting for about 45% of the country’s foreign-exchange earnings. The hydroelectric potential of the Mono River, which forms Benin’s border with Togo, is being developed, with the construction of dams for power generation and irrigation. Mineral reserves, notably of marble, iron, and phosphate, have not been fully exploited, which also presents an opportunity for investment, the DTI said. Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

Mayawati slams Yogi for hike in petrol diesel prices

first_imgLucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Tuesday slammed the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh for increasing the prices of petrol and diesel. The “cruel decision” would lead to inflation and affect the middle and lower sections of society, she said in a statement. “The decision to increase petrol and diesel prices is cruel as it will lead to inflation and affect crores of people. This will also increase the difficulties of people who are already facing the burden of increase in prices of all commodities and growing unemployment.” The Uttar Pradesh government has hiked prices by increasing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol to 26.80 per cent while that on diesel to 17.48 per cent. The new and hiked prices came into effect from Tuesday.last_img read more

Geno Smith Wasnt Better Than His Backup

In the most surreal bit of sports news to hit Tuesday’s wires, Geno Smith, the incumbent starting quarterback for the New York Jets, is going to miss six to 10 weeks with an injury. And it wasn’t just any kind of injury; it was the kind you get when a teammate punches you and breaks your jaw.According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, now-cut linebacker IK Enemkpali slugged Smith because he failed to reimburse Enemkpali for a $600 plane ticket. Jets fans — at least, Jets fans in the FiveThirtyEight office — rejoiced. But coming into the preseason, this Jets team showed at least a vague sense of promise. Are the Jets really better off without Smith? Last year, New York went 4-12 (3-10 under Smith) with one of the NFL’s worst passing offenses, and Smith was pretty bad for the second straight season. In fact, his career has gotten off to one of the worst starts of any QB since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Although Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw kicked off their careers with equally bad passing efficiency numbers, it’s far more likely that Smith is a talent on par with, say, Kyle Boller than that he’s harboring hidden star potential. And while Smith will be 25 this season, an age at which QBs still show a decent amount of improvement, the typical aging curve wouldn’t even carry Smith to league-average status at his peak.Meanwhile, the Jets’ backup quarterback isn’t a bad one. Longtime Buffalo Bills starter Ryan Fitzpatrick occupied the seat behind Smith and — statistically speaking — he’s probably a better QB than the man slated for the huddle, at least in the short term. Over the past two seasons (when he was with the Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans), Fitzpatrick’s Total QBR1ESPN’s play-by-play-based measurement of quarterbacking performance, which grades on a 0-100 scale. of 54.1 was better than Smith’s 41.2 mark during that span, and Fitzpatrick’s cumulative ProFootballFocus grade of +11.3 vastly outpaced Smith’s total of -37.3. By the numbers, the Jets are better off with the glass-jawed Smith out of the game, holding a clipboard on the sidelines.Of course, these kinds of assessments always come with the caveat that individual football statistics are obscured by countless interactions, coaching decisions and other contextual factors. And the Jets did add a good receiver over the offseason, Brandon Marshall, so it’s possible Smith would have improved significantly in 2015 had he not run afoul of Enemkpali’s fist. But Jets fans shouldn’t worry too much about what might have been: The team’s offense will probably be better with Fitzpatrick under center than it would have been with Smith. read more

Latorre criticizes Simeones attitude after Atleticos defeat

first_imgAfter Atletico Madrid’s unexpected defeat against Girona, pundit Diego Latorre came after Diego Simeone’s defensive style of play again.Despite having the results that tend to be acceptable for any Atletico Madrid fan, manager Diego Simeone still has a fair share of critics such as Diego Latorre who really hate his tactics and come after him every chance they get.The former Boca Juniors player and now a pundit at Fox Sports, has always been very vocal when he talks about Simeone’s determination to play in a certain way and doesn’t seem to understand why he wastes all that talent of players by asking them to play defensively.Latorre is one of Argentina’s authorized voices in regards to all the people who represent their football abroad, he doesn’t think that Diego Simeone’s philosophy is in line with the way that most of the people from their country understand football. It’s okay when Simeone has already won important titles with Atletico Madrid while playing defensive football, but Latorre loves talking trash against ‘Cholo’ whenever he is down after getting eliminated from a competition of loses an important match with the same tactics. The pundit took his rage to Twitter once again after Simeone responded to critics for the way his squad played against Girona on Wednesday. If Diego Simeone prefers to play poorly and qualify to the next round, they we would have to ask why his team didn’t go through to the next round,” Tweeted Latorre as quoted by Marca.“Nobody picks the result in matches like this, it is a wish that one has. The trickery has worked very well in people’s psyche, that’s exactly why the empty preach remains with the fans. Nobody ever responds against them.”“But of course, first you have to think in order to respond properly to any of his speeches.”“Simeone is a good manager, but his message is a real pity. He could also help the cause by staying away from the illusion of making everybody think he is a winner even in defeat, a message that has hurt us so much as a country.”“‘Cholo’, who is a very good manager, has been losing against Madrid and Barça for years but people sell you the winning formula whenever he wins (with one of the most expensive clubs in the world).”Gerard Pique, Neymar, BarcelonaLa Liga Betting: Match-day 4 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Despite it being very early into La Liga season, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have had unprecedented starts to their campaigns. With this in…“They don’t sell you the same formula when he loses a final or gets eliminated by Qarabag in the Champions League. Anywho…” He concluded. Claro, para eso hay q pensar https://t.co/89uzErgMPk— Diego Latorre (@dflatorre) January 16, 2019Even though Latorre does seem like he has a personal issue against ‘Cholo’, one has to look at the real meaning of his words and understand that the former player only wants the best for the Argentina National Team.Diego Simeone has been repeatedly mentioned amongst the managers who could take the position sometime in the future, a proposal that Latorre obviously rejects because of this defensive style of football that ‘Cholo’ won’t stop preaching. The Fox Sports pundit is a romantic, his style of play actually betrays him because we are talking about one of the most artistic players who ever wore a jersey for either Boca Juniors or the Argentina National Team. It’s clear that his philosophy doesn’t align with Simeone’s and that’s the real reason he will always go after ‘Cholo’, even in the times he wins a title.Simeone’s latest Copa del Rey elimination doesn’t mean that everything is lost for Atletico Madrid, it actually means they will have more time to prepare for the other two competitions.Hace 30 años, Diego Latorre debutaba con la camiseta de Boca Juniors.
